US Filipino nurses jobs delayed by retrogression

Manila Bulletin By PHOEBE JEN INDINO  January 10, 2010   CEBU CITY – An official from the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) stated that retrogression continues to be the reason why no visas for competent nurses applying for work in the US are available, thus resulting to delay in their employment overseas.

Under said visa retrogression, as of December, 2009 visa applications from the Philippines shall be processed only through to August, 2005.

Gabato also stressed that the processing of documents usually takes at least four years because qualified nurses will be considered immigrants, which is why they have the privilege of bringing their families abroad.

November 2009 NLE: Record number 95,000 take nursing board exams

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Can you imagine in this tight job market for nurses there will be another 95,000 candidates to take the nursing exam? Where will these jobs come from?

Marco Sto. Tomas, a member of the PRC’s board of nursing, said after a review of past tests, he added that the passing rate has been declining, now estimated at 40 percent, which indicated the urgent need for the academe to identify where the examinees are having difficulty.

According to Sto. Tomas, the test given by the board aims mainly to test the “minimum competence” of the country’s nursing graduates to assume entry-level positions..
